I went to see this on Friday night with Mr Push and Chaos Monkey and was happily pleased with how it turned out.

After seeing The Day The Earth Stood Still in December, the last film I saw in the cinema, I’ve been a bit weary of going and spending wasting money on a ticket for a film that turns out to be such a duffer.

So Ruthy and I invested in the CineWorld Unlimited Card, a bargain at £12 per month if you intend to watch at least 2 films a month, and the first film i’ve had the time to see has been Frost/Nixon.

Now, the guys from the writing group have met up a few times for filmage and I’ve only made it for The Day the Earth Stood Still and the inevitable session in the pub afterwards.  And a few of them had a plan for Friday night and, although it wasn’t one I initially wanted to see, we went to see Frost/Nixon.

The was something about the trailer that was quite compelling and go and see it we did, after a hearty meal at Wagamamas.  Hmmm, tasty.

So, the film.

Brilliant.  Absolutely excellent.  And early contender for Film Of The Year.

For those of you who don’t know, here’s the quickly boiled down story.

President Nixon does bad things, it’s found out he does bad things and he resigns (the only president in American history to do so).  The next President pardons him and everyone gets very upset.  (Americans take their politics very seriously, unlike us who realise that they’re all a bunch of wasters and that the system is broken beyond repair…)

In steps David Frost, a presenter and talk-show host, who wants to get the interview with the guy, hoping to have him spill the beans on how naughty he was.

Okay, there’s a lot more to it, but that’s the boiled down version remember?  You want more, go and watch the film.  And if you do, you won’t regret it.

Michael Sheen, Frank Langella and, to be honest, everyone in the film shine.  Of particular note is Sam Rockwell who is superb.  (Extra mention goes to Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt who, as expected, deliver.)

And that’s all I can really say.  You really have to go and see it.

Yeah, us Americans are still in the idealistic “Democracy works better than everything else, right?” phase, something everyone else has shaken their head over already and moved on. We’ll learn. Hey, at least we voted for a good president this time ’round!
